NORTH-SOUTH SKIRMISH ASSOCIATION
CIVIL WAR BLACK POWDER COMPETITION SHOOTING

The 4th Louisiana Infantry team is a member of the North-South Skirmish Association (N-SSA) where members shoot in competitions using Civil War Era both reproduction and original weapons (rifled musket, smoothbore musket, muzzle loader carbine, breech loader carbine, Henry and other repeaters, and revolvers.

These events are both individual and team competitions. While individual target shooting is fun, the team events are even more so. Teams shoot targets like 4-inch tiles, clay pigeons hung on a wire, gallon jugs, 2 liter bottles, 5 oz. paper cups, three-inch clay pots, 12-ounce soft drink cans, eggs and more. They are challenging and fun for all.

The competitors all wear authentic replicas of the civil war uniform. Guns are checked for authenticity.

For anyone needing a new uniform, the 4th Louisiana Historian, Leighton Young, highly recommends the following:

You will need the Columbus Depot Jacket fully lined and with Infantry Blue trim on cuffs and collar made from gray jean cloth. The jack is optional and only worn occasionally when it is cold. If you do decide to get it, order it one size larger than you normally wear because you want it to be loose fitting for shooting in, and for wearing over a matching vest if you want to get one, and to allow for some room to grow into or for shrinkage whatever comes first. A pair of matching infantry trousers, with mule ear or side seam pockets and a hat of some kind, a pair of suspenders, wool socks, and unbleached cotton military shirt would complete our version of a late war uniform. I will let you know about the cotton pants for Summer soon.

Get your leather together including a shoulder sling and a sword bayonet to go with your musket. If you want a new reproduction or an original bayonet, they will probably be $50 and $150 respectively.

And last but not least check out the following article on sighting in your musket.
