A Master of Science Nursing degree is a postgraduate degree that is needed for registered nurses to work in more specialized areas of medicine. A MSN can be used as a prerequisite for a doctorate level nursing degree. It is also in the process of becoming a transitioning practice for the Doctor of Nursing Practice.

A nursing master’s degree will allow someone who has no previous education in nursing to break into the field. It will also help those already employed in some area of nursing increase their pay rate and advance their career.

Certain specialty nurses must have a graduate degree. For example, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, nurse-midwives, and nurse practitioners must all have a Master’s degree in nursing. A typical program completion time is 18 to 24 months. During this time students will complete 36 to 67 hours of credit while learning innovative interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare. These programs will typically require that the person has already completed a Bachelor’s degree program in nursing. They should have already obtained a valid RN license, and they will be required to have the minimum GPA and GRE scores that the school requires. Most programs will also require that the student has already gained some clinical experience.

Many online programs are now available for Master’s programs. This is an ideal approach for those who are already employed as nurses and are looking to further their education and their career. Many nurses are being required to know more and be able to have as much knowledge as a doctor. An online program is a great way for someone to gain these additional skills and still work their full time job.

Most people who enter a MSN program will go into four different specialties. These are nurse practitioner, certified nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, and certified nurse midwife. All of these types of nurses are referred to as advanced practice nurses. For instance, students might wish to also go into business administration, public health, or hospital administration. This will allow them to not only become advanced in medical areas but also in how the business runs as a whole.
