GOD BLESS AMERICA

Fellow Musketeers,

On july 20 the 4th LA once again made the trek to Briarfield state park near Brent Alabama. This time it was Bob Kelley, Billy Howard, Bill Hicks, Jim Wood and new skirmisher Rod Harbin Jr making the trip. Rod showed up in full uniform and ready to go. This event was hosted by the 20th GA. who provided a well run skirmish and well stocked snack shack.

We shot individual targets friday afternoon in warm but dry conditions. It looked as if there would be a light turnout but we ended up with about 70 shooters. Friday night it cooled to 65 degrees with low humidity. Great weather for camping.

Saturday it remained warm and dry and we had a great time finishing up on the individual targets. Carbine team came next and altho we shot pretty well, especially new recruit Rod, who nailed 5 of those pesky pigeons on the cardboard, we finished out of the medals among the 10 carbine teams. Revolver match followed and with only Rod, Bob and Jim for the four man team, we finished well back among the seven revolver teams.

Smoothbore team competition wrapped up the day with Billy, Bill, Bob and a pickup from Forrest Escort making up the team. There were many smoothbore teams and no medal for the 4th LA. We enjoyed another night of cool sleeping weather in the campground.

Sunday morning's musket match found us with only 6 shooters for our 8 man team as only 1 pickup was available from Tuckers Naval Brigade, so needless to say we were not competitive. Altho we came up empty on the team medals, we did win a few in individual competition as follows:

Bob Kelley
1st place - Breechloader Repeater 50 yards with a score of 45
2nd place - Smoothbore 25 yards ~ 47xx
3rd place -  Smoothbore 50 yards ~ 42
2nd place -  Smoothbore agg ~ 89xx
3rd place -   Revolver ~ 25 yards ~ 46

Jim Wood
3rd place Carbine, 50 yards ; score unknown as I did not feel that I shot well and never checked the score-board.

Next skirmish is hosted by the 4th Tenn at Smokey Bottom near Union City Tenn on 23-24 Aug. Bob, Billy and Rod plan on going. I may go if I can get some of you Louisiana boys to go with me to share expenses. I have already received the invitation for the fall nationals to be held in Winchester, Va on 1-5 October. DEADLINE IS AUGUST 1, 2008 to be registered to shoot; so let me know who intends to go ASAP. Hope to see you all at Smokey Bottom.

Yours in fire and smoke,

Jim Wood,
Adj 4th La Infantry
